Does Salt Make You Gain Weight? What the Scale Shows

By the Weightnote team · Updated · 4 min read

You ate one salty dinner and the scale jumped 1 kg overnight. Salt has no calories, so what happened? Here is how sodium moves the number on the scale, how long it stays and what to do about it.

Quick answer

Salt does not add body fat, but it does add water weight. A very salty meal can raise the scale by 0.5 to 1.5 kg (1 to 3 lb) within 24 hours, because your body holds extra water to keep sodium balanced. With normal eating and drinking, it usually clears in 2 to 4 days.

Does salt make you gain weight?

Salt makes the scale go up, but it does not make you fatter. Salt has 0 kcal, and fat gain needs a calorie surplus of roughly 7,700 kcal per kg (3,500 kcal per lb). The extra weight is water your body holds on to.

That is why a salty weekend can look like a 1 kg gain on Monday and vanish by Thursday. The number is real, but it is not body fat. It is one of the main reasons for daily weight fluctuation.

Why does salt make the scale go up?

Your body keeps the sodium concentration in your blood within a narrow range. When you eat extra salt, your kidneys and hormones keep more water so the concentration stays stable. Water weighs 1 kg per litre, so retaining one litre adds 1 kg on the scale.

Food adds weight on its own too. A large salty meal with a drink can add 1 to 2 kg of food and liquid that is still in your system, which is part of why the number is high the next morning. For more on this, see water weight explained.

How much can salt change your weight?

For most people, a clearly salty day shifts the scale by about 0.5 to 1.5 kg (1 to 3 lb). People who normally eat little salt, or who are sensitive to sodium, tend to see bigger swings.

SituationTypical scale changeUsually gone in
One restaurant or takeaway meal+0.5 to +1.5 kg (1 to 3 lb)2 to 3 days
Salty weekend (cured meat, soup, snacks)+1 to +2 kg (2 to 4 lb)3 to 5 days
Switching suddenly to a low-salt diet-0.5 to -1 kg (1 to 2 lb)Within a week

These are typical ranges, not promises. Carbohydrates, hormones, sleep and training also move water, and they stack with salt. See why your weight fluctuates for the full picture.

How long does salt water weight last?

Most of it clears within 2 to 4 days if you return to your normal salt intake and drink enough water. Your kidneys remove the extra sodium and the water goes with it, mostly through urine.

Waiting is the whole strategy. Read how long it lasts in how long water weight stays.

How much salt is too much?

The World Health Organization recommends less than 5 g of salt per day, which is about 2 g of sodium or one level teaspoon. Many adults eat around double that, mostly from bread, processed meat, sauces, soups, cheese and ready meals rather than the salt shaker.

If you have high blood pressure, kidney or heart disease, or are on medication, ask your doctor about a safe salt level and about any sudden weight gain.

Is it only salt, or something else too?

Salt is rarely alone. Salty meals usually come with refined carbohydrates, alcohol and larger portions. Each gram of stored carbohydrate (glycogen) holds roughly 3 g of water, so a pizza night moves the scale more than salt alone would.

Hormones, hard training, poor sleep and travel add to the effect. If the scale jumps and you cannot explain it, look at the last 48 hours of food, drinks and sleep before blaming fat. Most of the time the answer is water.

How do you track weight when you eat a lot of salt?

Weigh at the same time every day and judge the trend, not one reading. A single high number after a salty meal is noise. A trend line smooths it out, and a weekly average shows whether you are actually gaining or losing fat. This is the approach in the weight trend.

The Weightnote iPhone app draws that trend line from your daily weigh-ins and shows the weekly change, so a salty day does not look like a disaster. It has a free trial, then a Pro subscription. Our weight trend tracker page explains the method.

If you want to know whether a gain could be fat, a quick check with the calorie deficit calculator shows how much surplus it would take.

Common questions

Can salt cause weight gain overnight?

Yes, as water weight. One very salty meal can raise the scale by 0.5 to 1.5 kg (1 to 3 lb) by the next morning. It is not fat and normally fades within a few days.

Will cutting salt help me lose fat?

Not directly, because salt has no calories. Eating less salt can reduce water weight and often goes with eating fewer processed foods, which may lower calories. Fat loss still needs a calorie deficit.

Does drinking more water flush out salt?

Normal drinking helps your kidneys do their job, but forcing huge amounts of water is not helpful or safe. Drink to thirst and keep your usual routine.

Why am I thirsty and puffy after salty food?

Sodium makes you thirsty and your body holds extra fluid to balance it. Mild puffiness in the hands, face or ankles is common and usually passes in a day or two.

Is it normal to gain 1 kg after a restaurant meal?

Yes. Restaurant food is often very high in salt, and meal weight plus water retention can easily add 1 kg. Judge your trend over a week.

When should I see a doctor about weight gain?

See a doctor if you gain more than 2 kg (4 lb) in a few days with swollen legs, shortness of breath or no clear cause, or if you have heart, kidney or liver problems.
